Classic Clips: Anne Bogart

Anne Bogart discusses how to approach a play from a director's perspective.

  1. As someone who is interested in directing as an art form, I love Bogart's statement about collaboration. She discusses how she is interested in all of the opinions "in the room" and takes them into consideration while directing. Although this would have to happen in moderation for productive work to get done, I think this is a concept that directors and theatre artists should strive for. It is often the director of a piece who gets top-billing credits while there are often designers and other artists who contribute massive amounts of material to a production. The director surely spearheads a rehearsal process and makes final decisions about what is relevant and cohesive to a production, many other minds have contributed. As Bogart states in the clip, when collaborators "in the room" are truly heard and recognized, the best work possible emerges.
